Tandil, Argentina

Image
We woke up to Buenos Aires closed for business this morning, as they await the commencement of the G20. Most of the roads were barricaded, which made getting out of town a chore. After finally finding the highway, and ensuring we were headed in the correct direction, we were off to Tandil!!! Our first stop was along the highway for food. We passed several promising leads and finally opted for a small cart, billowing smoke, on the side of the road. The true tell tale sign of a solid offering is where you see truck drivers pulled over :) We all got chorripan, but they also served up various cuts of beef and pork and even gave us a pile of beef for the boys. It was a sausage on a bun and it was absolutely delicious. We made it to Tandil just in time to beat a storm and bunkered down for the night after gathering a few necessities and trying to go out for a pasta dinner that turned into pasta dinner at home. The next day we decided to explore our surroundings by going for a nice ...

Buenos Aires, Argentina wk 2

Our first week in reflection was a little hectic….this week we've been a little lazier. It's also been raining... Isa and I started the week with a walking tour that we found on Airbnb. Yes, Airbnb has tours, lots and based on our experience today, they are pretty amazing. We spent the afternoon touring several neighbourhoods in BA. The tour relayed information about BA history throughout the centuries but also tango history during these times. Our guide argued that social history follows political history very closely. We learned a ton and got to see lots of little local secrets, like the mansion ontop of an apartment building and the San Telmo tight rope walker! BA's history is intense and it's very dark. It was amazing to us that people here are so lovely considering what happened during the dictatorship only decades ago. I would highly recommend you take any tour while in BA, but if possible, take ours. It had a unique feature, in the evening, our guides took us t...

Buenos Aires, Argentina Week 1

We have officially kicked off the third leg of this crazy adventure!! We landed in Buenos Aires after an excruciating ten and a half hour flight from Toronto. Even though we ended up with an extra seat for Vander, the redeye did not treat us well. I tried to keep reminding myself that it was like a night shift, but in reality I've been out of the game far too long and this was painful! We survived in the end, grabbed a remis (hired car) and were able to check into our apartment immediately. After getting settled, we ventured out in search of food and to check out our new neighbourhood, Montserrat. We ended up stumbling onto the absolute best coffee (Habito), in what I am now convinced is all of Argentina (not really known for coffee here). First impressions of Buenos Aires weren't spectacular, but eventually we strolled further out of our little corner and found a beautiful plaza, tasty food and beers and friendly people. Plaza Lavalle The next day we ventured t...
