Hello and goodbye Sydney....were we really even ever here?
It was a quick 2 day layover in Sydney for us. We decided not to spend time in Australia because after a month and a half between Raro and NZ our bank account needed a reprieve.


Little fun fact....did you know as a Canadian you need a VISA ahead of time to visit Australia?! No...well we didn't either. I thought us commonwealth countries were buddies. Thankfully the airline was able to issue us one at check in....total money grab.

We stayed in an airbnb close to the airport. The taxi alone was 60$ each way for the 10 min ride.


We walked down our street and got a famous meat pie from Harry's Cafe de Wheels. I then persuaded everyone to walk back up the street to Ikea for some cheap hotdogs and ice cream (it was no coincidence that I chose to work at the only hospital in Toronto next to an Ikea).

The next day we decided to take the train downtown and catch the hop on hop off tour of Sydney. The entire downtown is under extensive construction and it seems every inch of warf is being converted to luxury condos or shops/restaurants.  The only interesting fact I can tell you is that in it's formative years, Sydney's currency was rum.




Luke and I enjoyed some Bintangs (Bali beer) and scraped together dinner while the teens toured downtown. The rest of the evening was spent finishing laundry and repacking. We are all very excited about Vietnam tomorrow, but also a little nervous. We went with an online ompany for our Visas. They have all trickled in this week but one, Luke's.  The site states up to 5 days and tomorrow is the 5th....here's hoping everything goes according to plan.

Made it to Guayaquil, Ecuador! The first stamp in the boys' passports. They were great on the flight from Fort Lauderdale.  Arch slept most of it and Van flirted with all of the spanish women. Yesterday we hiked up to Faro Cerro Santa Anna. It's one of the oldest areas of Guayaquil having survived a fire in the 1800s that wiped out most of the original city. It also was home to a castle which guarded the city against pirate attacks, which is now commemorated by a pirate themed bar. We had a great 360 view of the city. Now for the most important part....dinner. we ate at Picanteria la culata. It was delicious. We shared a shrimp civiche. Mom got rice with shrimp and I had fish in garlic sauce with smashed fried plantains. Luke had the same but whithout the garlic sauce. It was accompanied by some of the most stellar hot sauce known to man. Now were off to the coast!

Mauritius part 2

Island life is treating us very well. After our busy week of exploring, we've spent the last couple of days relaxing on the patio, visiting the beach, running and diving. Not a bad life really! Saturday, we decided to take a vacation from our vacation and drive to the southwest side of the island and stay a night or two. We piled into the car and made a couple of pit stops at some of the sights in Chamarel on the way to our weekend digs in Flic-En-Flac on the south west coast. Chamarel is nown for it's large waterfall and seven colored earth. We'd already been told not to expect much from the seven colored earth, but we had to see it anyways (we'd been to Rainbow Mountain and were on a multi-colored earth tour). Both sights were within a National Reserve. The drive was up through some elevation, so naturally, Isa was car sick haha. We saw monkeys on way to the park as well. Adventurous Ecuador - Olon, Equador August 2018

Luke blogging... Our life in Olon continues to be full of activities and new adventures.  The boys have discovered the beach and the many possible things to do there.  Vander runs into the surf as soon as we arrive.   Archie having a little less insulation plays in the sand and warms up in the sun before entering the water.  Arch has made much progress already though,  he will laugh and play in the waves now when before getting his feet wet was an ordeal. Saturday nights seem to be the night to really party hard here.  They had music pumping until 3 am.  We are thinking of joining the fun this Saturday night after the boys go to bed.  Despite the raucous Saturdays Olon is normally  a sleepy beach town.  Full of great people and tourists alike.  One thing we've found in Equador is that you do not get taken advantage of as a tourist as often as in other countries.
